Graduation season is upon on us, and it has me feeling a little emotional! I can’t believe it’s been 2 years since I graduated from grad school, 9 years since I received my undergraduate degree (Fight On Trojans!), and 13 years since I graduated from high school! What’s crazy to me is that it doesn’t feel like it’s been that long since I was roaming the halls of San Gorgonio High School. My friends and I went to a “Girls Love Beyoncé” party a few days ago in Downtown LA. (Side note, I’m pretty sure I mention Beyoncé in every blog post, here and here for example. There’s no hiding my love for Queen Bey!)
The party playlist was 90% Beyoncé songs and 10% music from high school – I’ve never heard a more perfect song collection! Dancing along to songs from my youth like P Diddy’s (Puff Daddy’s?) “I Need a Girl” and Nivea’s “Don’t Mess With My Man” made me feel so nostalgic for “back in the day.” The event also reminded me of an undeniable life truth: Time stops for no one. We may feel that moments from our past are close and familiar, but the reality is as we get older time moves faster. If I could go back and give advice to my high school graduate self, I would say Mind Your Time: don’t waste time and don’t rush time.

Don’t Waste Time
I am 31 years old and I am just beginning to truly go after what I want in life. This honestly makes me a little sad. I’m not sad because I’m 31 (OK, I am a little sad about that), I’m sad because I spent so much of my 20’s being complacent with life and avoiding my dreams. I was scared to really pursue anything because I was terrified my desires wouldn’t become reality. This is such a ridiculous mindset, but so many of us feel this way. To quote Kanye West, “shoot for the stars so if you fall you land on the clouds.” As corny as that sounds, it’s so true! Learn from my mistakes: don’t let the fear of failure cause you to waste time and keep you from pursuing your dreams!
Don’t Rush Time
Not rushing time is different from wasting time, and the difference between the two is very important. There are certain things in life that shouldn’t be rushed, and opportunities may come your way that aren’t meant for you. Turning down an ill-fitted opportunity doesn’t equal complacency. Instead, this action shows you know yourself well enough to distinguish between opportunities that will advance your life and opportunities that will set you back. This is a lesson I learned the hard way in romantic relationships. I won’t go into the messy details, but let’s just say my life would be a little less hectic had I not tried to “make it work” with people who weren’t right for me.
Timepiece: Unique Watch from Jord Watches
When Jord Watches contacted me for a collaboration I thought the timing (no pun intended) couldn’t be more perfect. I’m in the middle of having these reflective, internal conservations about time and a watch company wants to work with me! As I mentioned before, I don’t personally know anyone graduating this year, but if did I would gift them a Jord Watch. This unique watch embodies the concept of “minding time.” Aside from the obvious fact that a watch is a constant reminder of time, Jord Watches are very different from others on the market. The watchbands are hand crafted and made of wood; my particular watch is made of sandalwood, which is native to East Africa and Argentina. The oil in sandalwood has been used for centuries in cosmetics, eastern medicine, and religious ceremonies! So what does being one of a kind have to do with minding time? If you understand that you are special, you won’t feel pressured to live by the standards of others, you won’t pursue opportunities that aren’t meant for you, and you won’t rush time! I love everything my new arm candy represents, and definitely recommend this unique watch to all of you.
Now to the fun part 🙂 I’ve teamed up with Jord Watches to give one lucky fashionista or fashionisto a $100 credit to use on jordwatches.com! The best part? Everyone who enters the contest gets a $25 gift code once the contest ends on 5/28! You can enter here or by clicking the link in my instagram bio 🙂 Don’t miss out on the opportunity to purchase this unique watch and so many other styles!
Thanks for letting me be real with you in this post. I know the topic was a little less fashion and a little more life advice, but I just felt like it was something I should share.
