I consider myself an adventurous person. I’m not an all out dare devil, but I’ve done some crazy things like skydiving and jumping off a cliff into a river without (much) hesitation. I’d like to think this sense of adventure translates to my clothing choices. I’m the girl at work who is always pushing the limits of the office dress code, and I NEVER pay attention to rules like “don’t wear white after labor day” or “you can’t wear color ‘x’ with color ‘x.’”
Some of you have asked me how to try new trends and push the boundaries of your usual style without looking silly or inappropriate. I’ve done a lot of personal and experimental research on this topic, and I want to share four tips I’ve learned that will help you successfully try new fashion trends and push your style limits!
Ease into New Fashion Trends
The first time I try a new style I almost always go for black or a neutral color to ease myself into the look. That’s what I did here with my new lucite heel booties! I’ve been eyeing the lucite trend for awhile and wanted to add it to my wardrobe, but I was thoughtful about it; I wanted to make sure the piece I purchased felt like me and would actually get some wear! I also wanted to be certain the shoes were as un-stripper like as possible because, let’s be honest, that’s the first thing we all think of when we see clear heels! The booties are a perfect way for me to ease into this new fashion trend because the lucite is just a detail. The shoes allow me to incorporate a little adventure with a style I’m already comfortable with.
Keep it Casual
I paired my booties with a very casual outfit: a t-shirt, denim shorts, and a camouflage jacket. With style in general, I think it’s really important to not look like you’re “doing too much.” As I mentioned, I’m hyper sensitive about the clear heels and stripper association so I made sure the rest of my look was as casual and downplayed as possible! The casual additions also give the look an unassuming feel which I really like 🙂
Pair the New Trends With Trusted Favorites
Velvet is one of those fabrics that goes in and out of style every decade. I think the last time I wore velvet prior to this bodysuit was a juicy couture jumpsuit circa 2001! Velvet can look tacky if not worn correctly and that’s something I definitely wanted to avoid. I chose this velvet bodysuit because the off the shoulder silhouette is a fit I already know works for me. I also wore my ripped jeans because they are my absolute fave (if you follow me on instagram you’ve seen me in them more than a few times), and they fit me well. By combining new trends with trusted favorites I’m lowering the risk of a fashion fail!
Wear your New Fashion Trends with Confidence and Know When to Go Another Direction!
Confidence is our best accessory. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve picked up something in a store and had a friend say “you aren’t going to buy that! What are you going to wear that with?!” My answer is always “I”ll make it work!” I always assume clothing will work on me and that’s the kind of confidence needed to pull off new style trends! Now that’s not to say I never have fashion fails. There are lots of looks I’ve discovered don’t work for me, like overalls! When overalls came back a couple years ago I tried on pair after pair and couldn’t find one that fit correctly. However, recently I found this super cute H&M Loves Coachella denim dress that has an overalls feel but with a little more sass and a better fit; I realized traditional overalls don’t work on me so I went the other direction!
I hope these tips were helpful! I’m thinking of starting a Style Tip series so let me know if there’s anything you’d like me to talk about! Make sure to SUBSCRIBE to my blog so you don’t miss out on what’s to come!
